Do Casinos Export Bankruptcy? [Working Paper]

Do Casinos Export Bankruptcy? (2005, March) is a new working paper authored by Thomas A. Garrett and Mark W. Nichols. It measures the extent to which destination resort casinos export bankruptcy back to visitors’ home states. Previous literature has alluded to this possibility, but to date studies have only examined the influence of local casinos on local bankruptcy.

The February 2005 issue of Harm Reduction Journal contains the article "The epidemiology of college alcohol and gambling policies" by Shaffer et al. Fortunately, this is an open-access journal -- meaning that anyone with Internet access can read / download this article.

Proceedings for the New Zealand conference, "Gambling and Problem Gambling in New Zealand: Taking Stock and Moving Forward on Policy, Practice and Research," are now available on the eCOmmunity web site. They are the combined proceedings from the International Gambling Conference and the International Think Tank on Presenting Gambling Populations and First Contact Services.

Institute Newsletter -- Feb / Mar 2005

The Institute's bi-monthly newsletter 'Research Reveals...' Volume 4, Issue 3 is now available online. It contains a feature article profiling the Institute-sponsored research of economist Dr. David Walls at the University of Calgary. He's been examining the betting behaviour of gamblers in both simulated and real-world settings.

Federal Government's Share of Lottery Proceeds

Many people are unaware that the Government of Canada terminated its involvement in lotteries as of January 1, 1980 . In return, the ten provinces agreed to contribute an annual sum of $24,000,000 adjusted for inflation, to the Federal Government.

If you're wondering what that contribution is worth these days, the Public Accounts of Canada 2004 report indicates that $59,267,337 was paid in 2003-2004 and $57,666,332 in 2002-2003.

The document title is "Casino Gaming in America: Key Findings of the National Gambling Impact Study Commission (1997-99)" (2005, March).

The article, "Win or Lose" from Revenue Magazine contains an interesting look at the people behind all Internet affiliate programs that send all those spam email messages for drugs, online gambling, and pornography. Lottery to Finance Montreal Prison

In 1783, the City of Montreal was in great need of a new prison and thought that the best way to raise funds for its construction was through a lottery. Only a handful of these tickets are known to have survived. To find out more about the lottery click "From the Exhibition Room...".

Sprott Securities Inc. has produced what appears to be a exhaustive look at the Canadian gaming industry. An advertisement for the publication is called "Poised For Growth: The Definitive Report on Canadian Gaming". Too bad the price is a hefty $1,000 instead of about $100 or so!

Oregon Problem Gambling Awareness Resources

The Addiction Service division of the Oregon Department of Human Services has put together a compilation of resources as part of the 2005 Problem Gambling Awareness Week (March 6-12). See half way down their problem gambling web page.

Interestingly, it seems that the State of Oregon is right up there with Nevada when it comes to the number of gambling formats that have been legalized.

ANU Study on Gender, Culture and Help Seeking

Another valuable resource has recently been made available on the web site of the Centre for Gambling Research, Australian National University. Jan McMillen and her team of investigators produced the report "Help-Seeking by Problem Gamblers, Friends and Families: A Focus on Gender and Cultural Groups" (2004, October) for the ACT Gambling and Racing Commission (GRC) to examine the issue of helpseeking by gamblers, friends and families in the ACT with a focus on cultural and gender issues.

Lotteries & State Fiscal Policy

The Tax Foundation report Lotteries and State Fiscal Policy (2004, October) examines State lotteries and discusses some of their implications as a voluntary, though regressive tax.
