Charitable Gambling - Ontario [Consultation]

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario has produced "A Consultation Document on the Modernization of Charitable Gaming" (2005, May). "This paper provides some background regarding how charitable gaming is currently regulated, what is to be accomplished through this consultation, and guiding principles for the consultation. The most important section in this paper outlines a number of areas for possible change and requests comment and feedback on those points."

American Journal of Economics and Sociology [Call for Papers]

Larry Moss, editor of the American Journal of Economics and Sociology has posted the message "Call for Papers (2006)" on the History of Economics (HES) email list. This issue of the American Journal of Economics and Sociology (AJES) will combine paperson the subject of gaming/gambling from a variety of different perspectives and differentresearch methodologies in the social sciences.

The Canada West Foundation (CWF) report "Gambling in Canada 2005: Statistics and Context" (2005, June) is available on their web site. The report uses statistics from the 2003-04 fiscal year as well as historical trend analysis to provide context for an examination of Canada's main gambling policy issues.

Bill S-11 [Canadian Government Bill]

Bill S-11 is an act to amend the Criminal Code (lottery schemes) and was introduced to the Canadian Senate by Jean Lapointe. Basically, it seeks to restrict VLTs to either casinos or horse racing tracks. You can follow the status of Bill S-11 using the LEGISinfo web site provided by the Library of Parliament.

I've counted the number of casinos (including horse racing tracks with slot machines) in Canada and determined that there are currently 82 of them in operation. They broken down as follows:

British Columbia (19); Alberta (19); Saskatchewan (7); Manitoba (4); Ontario (27); Quebec (3); Nova Scotia (2); Yukon (1).

Problem Gambling & Low Income Earners [Report]

"House of cards: Problem gambling and low income earners in Tasmania" (2005, June) is a report from Anglicare Tasmania [Australia]. This research found that gambling expenditure need not be at a high level for negative impacts to be experienced by people on low incomes.

Harm Minimization Measures [Research Report]

"Review of the ACT Government's Harm Minimisation Measures" (2005, March) is a study produced by the Centre for Gambling Research, Australian National University. The main focus is to report on the measures introduced between 1993 and 2002 in the Australian Capitial Territory were:

1) a $10 maximum bet on EGMs (electronic gaming machines, or ‘poker’ machines);
2) a mandatory three-hour shutdown of gaming machines each day, and;
3) a restriction on cash payment of winnings.

Gambling Research Panel Releases Two Studies [Research Reports]

The Gambling Research Panel [Australia] just released two new gambling-related research reports. They are Study of the Impact of Caps on Electronic Gaming Machines (2005, May) and Changes in Wagering within the Racing Industry (2005, May).
