Problem Gambling Services for CALD Communities [report]

The report "Research into health promotion and best practice services for culturally and linguistically diverse communities" (2005, December) is available from the web site of the Victorian Government Department of Justice.

This Australian report for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities contains findings and broad recommendations, which will be used to develop future directions for problem gambling service delivery and health promotion activities for CALD communities.

Gambling Knowledge [online newsletter]

The newsletter article "Gamble at your own risk" appears in the April 2006 issue of the American Psychological Association's Monitor on Psychology publication. It discusses two journal articles appearing in the March issue of Psychology of Addictive Behaviors (Vol. 20, No. 1) that relate to whether warning signs can actually stop people from gambling irresponsibly.

Internet Gambling & Policy Implications [report]

The report "An Analysis of Internet Gambling and its Policy Implications" (2006, May) is the latest in the American Gaming Association's series of 10th Anniversary White Papers.

Pew Research Center [Survey Report]

The survey report "Gambling: As the Take Rises, So Does Public Concern" (2006, May 23) was released today by the Pew Research Center. The telephone survey found that, "A modest backlash in attitudes towards legalized gambling has taken hold among an American public that spends more money on more forms of legal gambling now than at any time in the nation's history."

Also of interest is the related headline "48 states raking in gambling proceeds" (2006, May 23) which is a story from Pew's Stateline.org media service.

Lottery Adoption [e-journal article]

The article "The Geography, Economics, and Politics of Lottery Adoption" appears in the May / June, 2006 issue of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Review, May/June 2006, 88(3), pp. 165-80. In this paper the authors attempt to answer the question of why some states have adopted lotteries and others have not.

Gambling and Civic Morality [newsletter article]

The April / May 2006 issue of the Alberta Gaming Research Institute's 'Research Reveals...' newsletter contains a feature article discussing an Institute-funded research investigation into gambling and civic morality by Dr. William Ramp and Dr. Kerry Badgely.

Consumer Protection and Gambling [self-archived journal article]

The archived journal article "Truth in gaming: Toward consumer protection in the gambling industry" originally appeared in the Maryland Law Review (2004). In this meticulously documented paper, Kurt Eggert of the Chapman University School of Law recommends that individual gamblers be given clear, accurate, and timely information about the true costs of gambling in casino (with particular attention to slot machines).

The paper also provides some solid details about issues related to the costs and benefits of gambling.

Highlights of EU Gambling Industry Study [Presentation Slides]

A stakeholders meeting took place in Geneva, Switzerland on May 8, 2006 which met to present and seek feedback on a draft report on the EU Gambling Industry Geneva. Presentations from the meeting are available from the web site of the Swiss Institute of Comparative Law.

Youth Gambling International, Spring 2006 [newsletter]

International Journal of Mental Health & Addiction, January 2006 [journal issue]

The January 2006 issue of International Journal of Mental Health & Addiction (previously known as eCOMMUNITY) is available to subscribers. Of specific interest to gambling researchers is the article "Sentencing Problem Gamblers in New Zealand" by Graeme Minchin.

AGRI 2006/07 Call for Proposals [Research Grants]

The Alberta Gaming Research Institute has just released a call for 2006/07 research grant applications. Principal investigators must be from one of the three Alberta universities but there are no such restrictions on co-investigators.

2005 OSDUS Mental Health and Well-Being [Report]

The Ontario Student Drug Use Survey (OSDUS) is a population-based survey of Ontario students in grades 7 to 12. The SOGS-RA was used to measure gambling and findings are included in the 2005 OSDUS Mental Health and Well-Being Report (2006).

Gambling: Behavior Theory, Research, and Application [book]

The book "Gambling: Behavior Theory, Research, and Application" (2006) was just published by Context Press. The book is designed to allow a reader familiar with the general concepts and principles of behavior analysis to gain a greater understanding of how the field is addressing the area of gambling. Graduate students taking classes in behavioral applications, or those enrolled in seminars specific to gambling, will find this collection of papers a vital resource. The book will also be useful to clinicians interested in understanding the basic and conceptual foundations that underlie successful prevention and treatment approaches.
